Manjushree, known as the Bodhisattva of Wisdom, holds a central place in Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism. He embodies transcendent wisdom (prajñā), and his teachings are meant to help seekers dispel ignorance and attain true understanding.
Traditionally portrayed with a flaming sword in his right hand—symbolizing the cutting of ignorance—and a lotus bearing the Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra in his left, Manjushree represents the power of clear insight and mental clarity. His youthful appearance reflects the freshness and vitality of wisdom.
In Nepali and Tibetan Buddhist traditions, Manjushree is especially significant. According to legend, he is said to have drained the Kathmandu Valley, transforming it from a vast lake into a habitable land by cutting through the surrounding hills with his sword. This act not only symbolizes the triumph of wisdom over ignorance but also marks him as a founder and protector of civilization and culture in the region.
Devotees worship Manjushree to enhance their understanding, improve speech and memory, and guide their meditation practices. His mantra, “Om Ah Ra Pa Tsa Na Dhih,” is often recited to cultivate wisdom.
